Pros and Cons of Winter Swimming Pool Installation

In an effort to save money on swimming pool installation, you may be tempted to have your pool installed in the winter when there is less competition and the demand for swimming pools is low. While that thought process does have some weight to it, there are a number of pros and cons to winter swimming pool installation that you need to keep in mind. Depending on your area, this may or may not be the best time of year for you to install a pool in your backyard. Before you decide on installing a swimming pool in the winter, consider these pros and cons.

Mostly, the drawbacks to winter pool building is due to weather. Weather will cause delays in the process, however, the availability of builders willing to build your pool in winter will be numerous. As most builders will tell you – it is the absolute best time to build. Not only is it going to be less costly, the contractors will be more available. Even if the winter weather causes a long delay – you get first priority as Spring approaches.

Temperatures Too Cold to Pour Concrete

In many instances, the temperature outside is simply too cold to pour concrete. The concrete will not settle properly, which will cause it to dry unevenly or crack as the weather warms. If you live in an area with mild winter months, this may not be a big concern for you. In the northern states where winters are often below freezing for several months of the year, pouring concrete for a pool surrounding is simply not feasible.

Snow Piles Too High for Construction

Freezing rain, sleet, and snow can all create a hazardous work environment for swimming pool installation. If your yard is covered in layers of snow and ice, it may take too long to clear the area for pool construction. Some homeowners choose to wait until the early spring for their pool installation, where the demand is still low but the winter frost has started to melt away. Depending on the climate near you, this may be a better option for your pool installation.

Temperatures Too Low to Fill the Pool

If the temperatures outside are well below freezing, it would not be wise to run water through your pipes to fill the pool. This could cause the pipes to burst, either during the fill or afterward when the water settles. Again, this is climate dependent. If the temperatures in your area are above freezing for the winter, you should have no issues filling the pool. All of your swimming pool equipment will be winterized to prevent it from getting damaged in the cold.

Frustrations Too High (Because You Can’t Use the Pool)

This is mostly about mind over matter, but it can be frustrating to have a pool installed that you can’t use for a few more months. Of course, this is a small sacrifice to make for the money you can save in winter swimming pool installations, but it is something to keep in mind. This is especially true if you have children in your house because they may not be able to handle having a pool in the backyard that they can’t do anything with. Of course, the same is true if you have it installed in Spring, Summer or Fall. Weigh out your options before you create a headache for yourself later on.

When Should I Get My Swimming Pool Installed?

In order to determine when you should install your swimming pool, the best thing to do is to contact a team of trusted pool installers in your area to find out what time of year will work for you. Depending on your local climate, winter pool installation could be a completely viable choice that will in fact save you a ton of money. If the weather does not cooperate though, you may have to wait until the spring to have your pool installed.
