Pool Safety Tips for Dogs

Share this article:

With the summer months quickly approaching, you may be anticipating some fun family. For the pet lovers out there, that means including your dog in the festivities. Most dogs love swimming in the pool, but that does not necessarily mean that they know how to do so safely. It is your job as their protector to ensure that they do not put themselves in harm’s way. Listed below are some pool safety tips for dogs that you can use to keep your furry companion safe this summer.

Put a Fence around Your Pool

If you normally let your dog out while your family is inside the house, you need to make sure that there’s a barrier between the dog and the pool. It needs to be high enough for the dog not to be able to jump over, and you need to make sure there are no holes or openings that are big enough for him to fit through. This is also a good safety measure if you have children because it will help keep your kids away from the pool when you are not around. Put a lock on the gate just to be safe.

Show Your Dog the Steps

If you have an in-ground pool, you should have a set of steps leading into the pool. You need to teach your dog where these are so he can swim to safety. Get inside the pool and then let your dog jump in. Then grab him by the collar or leash and gently guide him towards the steps. If your dog responds well to his name, you may also call him from the direction of the steps without having to be inside the pool. Have treats ready for when he gets out so you can reward him for swimming to safety.

Get a Life Jacket for Your Dog

Most dogs can swim pretty well on their own, but some need a little extra help to stay afloat. If your dog does not swim well, you may want to invest in a life jacket for your pet to wear around the pool. It’s also a good idea to keep a life jacket for your pet on hand if you plan on going out on a boat or in the ocean at some point in time. It just ensures that your dog stays above the water and does not drown.

Trim Your Dog’s Nails

If you have an above ground pool, your dog’s nails may scrape against the side and eventually create a puncture or a weak spot that busts through the pool lining. By keeping your dog’s nails trim, you will help him feel better and protect your pool at the same time. You may also consider having your dog groomed regularly in the summer to keep him cool and to minimize the maintenance of his fur from your pool water.

If you follow the tips above, you and your family should be able to enjoy a summer full of fun with your pet in the pool.
