Pros and Cons of Hot Tubs: Part 1

Share this article:

A hot tub can be the perfect addition to a swimming pool, but it may not be the perfect addition for you. There are a number of pros and cons to hot tub installation that you need to keep in mind before making this investment. It may become your favorite spot in the backyard, or it could be a waste of money. We’ll help you decide which one is the case for you specifically.

PRO: Year-Round Entertainment Options

Unless you have a well-heated swimming pool, chances are you close your pool up for the winter. With a hot tub though, you can enjoy your outdoor entertainment area all year long. Hot tubs are also great for fall and spring when the weather is warm in the day but cold at night. You can warm up in the hot tub after a long day at work and enjoy the peaceful night around you.

CON: Year-Round Maintenance

If you are going to use your hot tub all year long, you are going to need to maintain it for the same stretch of time. Swimming pools need year-long maintenance as well, but they do not require much attention when they are not in use. If you are regularly using your hot tub, you will need to know how to maintain it or have a company that you can trust to take over the maintenance for you.

Note that hot tubs do not require as much maintenance overall as swimming pools do because there is less water and fewer pieces of equipment to worry about. But, because the water is heated, it has a higher level of sanitation issues.

PRO: Cheaper to Install than a Swimming Pool

If you are debating whether to get a swimming pool or a hot tub, you will spend a lot less money getting a hot tub. That isn’t to say that it is the better option for you as a whole, but for the initial installation, you will spend less on a hot tub.

CON: Pricey to Install as a New Addition

If you are simply enhancing your outdoor area with a hot tub, this may not fit into your budget. You need to think about how often you will use the hot tub and how much pleasure you will get from it to determine if it is worth the money. Weigh out the other pros and cons on this list before deciding how high your return on investment will be.

PRO: More Space for Guests to Enjoy

Having a hot tub in addition to a swimming pool means that you have even more space for guests to enjoy in your backyard. If your pool parties tend to be fairly crowded, the extra room in the hot tub may be just what you need to break up your guests and give everyone a spot to call their own.

CON: Less Space in Your Yard

If you have pets or children that play in the backyard, your hot tub could take up a large part of their running room. This, of course, depends on where you plan to put the hot tub. If you are going to place it on your porch, or you have plenty of space in your yard already, you won’t be making a sacrifice installing a hot tub.
